[identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] halfamoon

I was intending for my [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon contribution to be a post about the women in Doctor Who – and very quickly realised that could get very long and unwieldy, because the Doctor Who universe is not only enormous (thirty seasons and counting if you stick to the TV stuff alone; there are many hundreds of novels, comics and full-cast audio dramas) but it’s also got a ton of female characters who I adore, from bit-part characters with a few lines in a single episode to companions who spent years on the TARDIS.

The best way to go seemed to be a love thread/celebration thread, of a type I’ve done before for the companions. This time it’s a post about all the women of the Doctor Who universe, companions or not, from the classic series, new series, the ‘middle school’ books/audios/comics stuff, Torchwood, and The Sarah Jane Adventures. It’s going to work in the same way as the post linked above: leave a comment with a character in the subject line, and people can respond with what they love about that character, their best moments or quotes, fic recs, drabbles, picspam, relevant links, or anything else. Any female character’s fine, though if it’s a minor character you might want to add the relevant episode title to the subject, especially if they share a name (I’m happy to squee over both Jenny from The Doctor’s Daughter and Jenny from Human Nature but we need to know which is which).

I’ll add a list of links to threads as they appear. I don’t want to dictate a bunch of rules for this, but it should go without saying this is meant to be a fun, positive thing on a comm that’s about celebrating women, so keep that in mind (“I love Mel, I don’t know why so many people hate her!” is a rhetorical statement, not a request for more information) and try not to passive-aggressively slam other characters while loving on your own (the difference between “Donna’s brilliant, I loved having a slightly older companion” and “Donna’s brilliant; finally, a companion who’s not a simpering schoolgirl”).

And… go!

Donna was bluster and wind wound around a squirming ball of insecurity and low self-esteem. I love that by the end (even before she was Doctored-up!) she let go of that and truly believed in herself. It was joyful and painful to watch and I have no doubt that she will get there again. All by herself.

Martha was dealt a crap hand. She knew she was dealt a crap hand and she still rocked the shit out of her time on the TARDIS and Took Care Of Business in way that is awe-inspiring. I can't even imagine what the Year the Wasn't was like but the fact that she walked the world and lived with/saw/dealt with unimaginable horrors never fails to impress me.

The icon reminds me that I watched the teaser of Something Borrowed and realized I loved both Gwen Cooper and Eve Myles. (Who has superb comic timing in that one and sells the serious stuff as well.) Gwen's a terrier, won't give up once she has sunk her teeth into something, brave, occasionally selfish, the opposite of passive/aggressive, whatever that is (active/in-your-face?). A very real character with flaws and strengths. Someone to argue with (the Gwen/Rhys arguments are some of the most realistic couple arguments I've seen on screen) and count on when the situation is dire.

Jo snuck up on me. I had never heard anyone sing her praises, I had heard come "screamer" type complaints, and I hadn't expected to fall in love with her at all, but fall I did, as I saw her tease the Doctor, be an escape artist extraordinaire, snark at the Master (her "how about a 'curses, foiled again'?" hello to him remains one of my favourite DW quotes) and save the universe once or twice as well. And all that in early 70s fashion. Now I adore Jo, and fervently wish Katy Manning would show up in one of the specials.

Seriously, has no one done Charley yet?

Where do you start? She's so enthusiastic about her adventures with the oddest man she ever met. Her banter with Eight is brilliant and they're Best Friends Forever in Space. Or something. She's as straight-forward as they come and a woman of many contradictions: She shouldn't be alive, and now, she's with the wrong Doctor and keeping secrets.

Didn't we all fall in love with her along with the Doctor? The universe or Charley? Tough question.

I love Liz Shaw. She's brilliant, she has good nerves, and a nice line in snark. She's no more impressed with the military than the Doctor is, but she's a good deal more grown up about it. And she has chemistry like whoah with the Brigadier, which is always nice.

Also, it's refreshing to see an academic character who can dress, even if her hemlines are a bit startling ;)

Doesn't she?

And she's a fascinating character to complement the Doctor. Practical as opposed to headstrong; butt-kicking as opposed to pacifistic to a fault; wise as opposed to technical-scientific. She can detonate his technobabble with a one-liner. Gallifrey could certainly use a few more folk like her!

The Rani

Date: 2009-02-03 03:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pimpmytardis.livejournal.com
Not to be confused with SJA's Rani Chandra, the Rani is another renegade Time Lord with a history with the Doctor. She's probably Pip&Jane's best adversary. They created a character who acted like a dark mirror to the Doctor-- as the Master has always functioned-- but made her totally unique. The Rani's cold determination makes her, to me, perhaps even more chilling.

She's near the top my list for characters I'd love to see in the new series.

Peri Brown

Date: 2009-02-03 04:16 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] futuresoon.livejournal.com
While I was working my way up through Old Who, I kept hearing conflicting stories about Six. Some said he was horribly-written, overly cruel, and possessed one of the worst companions in the show's history. Some said he was horribly written but was much better in the audios and the aforementioned companion wasn't all that bad really. Then I finally got to the two of them, and fuck if I didn't fall for Peri Brown, one of the least-widely-liked companions with one of the least-widely-liked Doctors, as being one of my favorite companions ever. Sure, she was a bit of a screamer at times, but I love anyone who's willing to yell at the Doctor when he deserves it (and boy, did Six deserve it sometimes, much as I love him too), and I love how you could actually see the affection between her and the Doctor, no matter what anyone says about her complaining too much and him being a dick. I seriously wanted to go punch the writer of Mind-Warp in the face after I got to the end of that serial, and was so, so relieved when The Ultimate Foe revealed that it hadn't quite happened that way after all. It is my firm belief that Peri went on to be one of the best, wisest, and least-likely-to-take-any-shit rulers in the galaxy. And that the Doctor totally visited her now and again when he needed someone to yell at him. Loooooooove. ♥♥♥

I never disliked telly!Peri, but I did not have strong feelings towards her, mostly a mild like. But audio!Peri is so v v awesome and Peri/Erimem is one of the most awesome, shiny things that BF have done. I love their relationship madly, and it makes me love Peri, yes.

Oh, and "watch it, Porky" is yayful.

Melanie Bush

Date: 2009-02-03 04:18 pm (UTC)
From: [personal profile] semantics
Known far and wide as someone with a scream to rival Zoe's, Mel's got spunk and she gives the Doctor what he needs: carrot juice and someone to deflate his ego. Her rapport with both her Doctors is brilliant, and she's the sort of best friend that the Doctor is always in need of, because really, you have to be pretty damn awesome to make Mr "Please, Evelyn, More Chocolate Cake" Sixth Doctor exercise and stick to carrot juice.

Mel always manages to grab herself a companion for a serial and rocks on with them. Her wardrobe is right out of the 80's, and in that, it is amazing. It takes a special sort of situation to make Mel really snap, but when Davros managed it, he reaped the consequences. Crowning Moment of Awesome? I think so!

When Mel departs the TARDIS, we know she'll be just fine on her own, as she's just that sort of girl.

From: [identity profile] tigerkat24.livejournal.com
Evelyn fan weighing in! I adore her. She's so smart and capable, and one of the few older companions we see on the show. I love that she refuses to take any of Six's crap, that she bakes the most excellent chocolate cake this side of ever, that she's a brilliant scholar, and that she's a full partner to the Doctor even though she has some trouble running away at times. Basically, she's awesome.

Jackie Tyler

From: [identity profile] magicallaw.livejournal.com
Firstly, I have no Jackie icon, and with LJ giving me loads more pics, I should really do something about that.

Anyway, I thought Jackie was a lot of fun and a good character all throughout the series. Then I watched Love and Monsters and I really fell in love with her: when she was reminiscing about Mickey, when she said that she'd protect Rose and Doctor to the end of the Earth. I love that she got Handy a happy ending.

I have always loved Jackie; she's a far more complex character than people seem to think, and overriding everything is the fact she loves her daughter, and she never has cruel intentions, and she always - whether right or wrong - tries to do what she thinks is best for Rose. Their relationship, with its ups and downs and twists and turns, is one of the loveliest things the new series has done, and I'm so glad she got a happy ending, as she couldn't have deserved it more.

Reinette was bold, unafraid, and made the most of her life. She could also make at least some sense of the Doctor's mind, which is impressive.

Professor Amelia Rumford

Professor Rumford is one of those shoulda-been-a-companion characters for me. She's smart, game for adventure, and has delightful chemistry with Four. The scene in which she straight-out asks him, "Can I ask you a personal question? ... Are you from outer space?" is one of my favorites in Doctor Who.

Not to mention that the poor woman lost her girlfriend in the course of Stones of Blood -- she should have got to travel in the TARDIS as compensation!
