[identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] halfamoon

I was intending for my [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon contribution to be a post about the women in Doctor Who – and very quickly realised that could get very long and unwieldy, because the Doctor Who universe is not only enormous (thirty seasons and counting if you stick to the TV stuff alone; there are many hundreds of novels, comics and full-cast audio dramas) but it’s also got a ton of female characters who I adore, from bit-part characters with a few lines in a single episode to companions who spent years on the TARDIS.

The best way to go seemed to be a love thread/celebration thread, of a type I’ve done before for the companions. This time it’s a post about all the women of the Doctor Who universe, companions or not, from the classic series, new series, the ‘middle school’ books/audios/comics stuff, Torchwood, and The Sarah Jane Adventures. It’s going to work in the same way as the post linked above: leave a comment with a character in the subject line, and people can respond with what they love about that character, their best moments or quotes, fic recs, drabbles, picspam, relevant links, or anything else. Any female character’s fine, though if it’s a minor character you might want to add the relevant episode title to the subject, especially if they share a name (I’m happy to squee over both Jenny from The Doctor’s Daughter and Jenny from Human Nature but we need to know which is which).

I’ll add a list of links to threads as they appear. I don’t want to dictate a bunch of rules for this, but it should go without saying this is meant to be a fun, positive thing on a comm that’s about celebrating women, so keep that in mind (“I love Mel, I don’t know why so many people hate her!” is a rhetorical statement, not a request for more information) and try not to passive-aggressively slam other characters while loving on your own (the difference between “Donna’s brilliant, I loved having a slightly older companion” and “Donna’s brilliant; finally, a companion who’s not a simpering schoolgirl”).

And… go!

I love Liz Shaw. She's brilliant, she has good nerves, and a nice line in snark. She's no more impressed with the military than the Doctor is, but she's a good deal more grown up about it. And she has chemistry like whoah with the Brigadier, which is always nice.

Also, it's refreshing to see an academic character who can dress, even if her hemlines are a bit startling ;)

Donna was bluster and wind wound around a squirming ball of insecurity and low self-esteem. I love that by the end (even before she was Doctored-up!) she let go of that and truly believed in herself. It was joyful and painful to watch and I have no doubt that she will get there again. All by herself.

Martha was dealt a crap hand. She knew she was dealt a crap hand and she still rocked the shit out of her time on the TARDIS and Took Care Of Business in way that is awe-inspiring. I can't even imagine what the Year the Wasn't was like but the fact that she walked the world and lived with/saw/dealt with unimaginable horrors never fails to impress me.

Totally. The Doctor didn't do it for her. He only told her she was brilliant, she was brilliant all by herself.

I love Rose in all her teen-aged glory. She did things that made me cringe and things that made me love her madly which is just how it should be. She was a character struggling to come into her own and figure out her path. I'm not sure she knows what that path is yet but I have no doubt that when she decides, she will be amazing.

Donna is my favorite companion (keep in mind I've only seen the reboot AND I HAVEN'T SEEN JOURNEY'S END SO I KNOW I'M MISSING SOMETHING). I love that she's not a love interest for the Doctor at all; while I like Rose and Martha, Donna's OI!SPACEMAN! energy is a nice counterbalance to the Doctor love. I love how she goes from being very unsure of her ability to do things outside of the realm of everyday boring things to being totally badass. I also really, really like seeing gorgeous less skinny women on TV, and Donna is both. I also feel that she and Ten have the best shared comedic vibe, and I watch Doctor Who for the funny.

That was a lot of ramble, but I LOVE DONNA.

I think he was truly astounded she couldn't see how brilliant she was. I loved when he put the smack-down on Sylvia about constantly demeaning her. Go Doctor!

Jo snuck up on me. I had never heard anyone sing her praises, I had heard come "screamer" type complaints, and I hadn't expected to fall in love with her at all, but fall I did, as I saw her tease the Doctor, be an escape artist extraordinaire, snark at the Master (her "how about a 'curses, foiled again'?" hello to him remains one of my favourite DW quotes) and save the universe once or twice as well. And all that in early 70s fashion. Now I adore Jo, and fervently wish Katy Manning would show up in one of the specials.

When I think of Jo I just think of this tiny bundle of cuteness wrapped up in a funky dress with great boots on. Her determination always shone through for me.

Somewhere on LJ I've seen a Martha Jones: Community Organizer icon (in the Obama-campaign tradition). YES, THIS. Martha is a warrior, an organizer of people, a leader. She takes on all of these challenges and can just...handle it. I adore her. (Note: I need some Martha icons. Anyone got good ones?)
