Below are five fanvid recs. None of these are particularly recent, but they're favorites of mine and I thought I'd share. They're from all over the board, fandom-wise, but all feature some pretty fantastic female characters and were all made by some pretty fantastic vidders.

Title: Raise Hell
Vidder: [archiveofourown.org profile] walkthegale
Fandom: Jurassic Park movies
Music: Raise Hell by Brandi Carlile
Summary: Dinosaurs eat man, woman inherits the earth.

The editing and timing in this is just so well done! The ladies (and the dinosaurs) really shine in this. And, randomly, Brandi Carlile is one of my favorite singer/songwriters.

Title: [VID] Que Sera Sera
Vidder: [archiveofourown.org profile] ohvienna
Fandom: Star Trek Voyager, Star Trek Picard
Music: Que Sera Sera (Cover) by Pink Martini
Summary: "Whatever will be, will be..."

This is a wonderful character study of Seven of Nine incorporating her arc from child to Borg to the recent series (s1 of Picard). I think she's one of the most fascinating characters in Star Trek and this vid really showcases her journey.

Title: Back to Avalon
Vidder: [personal profile] jetpack_monkey
Fandom: League of Their Own (1992)
Music: Back to Avalon by Heart
Summary: I know I'm going home.

The editing is fantastic and the vid narrative is built so well - the build to the game, the heart-warming moments in the bridge, and the ending with the real-life ball players.

Title: [Vid] This Time's Everything
Vidder: [archiveofourown.org profile] odessie
Fandom: The X-Files
Music: This Time's Everything by Amy Macdonald
Summary: Here she goes again. (A Scully vid.)

The editing is incredible and this vid showcases her perseverance so well.

Title: Stayin' Low
Vidder: [livejournal.com profile] hollywoodgrrl
Fandom: Alien movies
Music: Stayin' Low! (Bee Gees vs. Lil Jon vs. De La Soul)
Summary: Hopin' she can sock it to me one mo' time.

Ellen Ripley is badass. This vid has ALL the swagger and it's one of my all-time favorites. Mind the gore (in case someone hasn't seen the movies? IDK). Vid also contains a lot of quick edits, fast cutting, and light flashes from source material.

I have just three recs for the theme "Sickness and Health," all for The X-Files, all set during or just after the cancer arc. (I know hurt/comfort is a hugely popular genre, but I rarely read it.)

I need to be upfront about this: I don't like most hurt/comfort stories. Unless the illness/injury is canon, it feels contrived, created to further the romance between the chosen pairing. Cancer fic has a different strike against it. I'm an RN who spent most of my career taking care of cancer patients, and frankly, most writers get it wrong—including the scriptwriters.

However, there is one story which I can recommend without reservation: "Isometry" by syntax6. She gets the details of Scully's illness right, she gets the characterizations right, she even creates a credible romance for Mulder and Scully. The story slots perfectly into canon, apart from the romance, of course. *g* After you've finished it, I recommend reading everything else by her. Most of her work is not archived at Gossamer so I've linked to her website.

Isometry by syntax6
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: none
Spoilers: Through Redux II
Characters/Relationships: Fox Mulder/Dana Scully
Summary: The story of a man, a woman and their lucky pickle. Season 4 cancer era. Rated NC-17.

I found two other stories I enjoyed. The first is a sweet vignette by [personal profile] denynothing1, set between season five episodes "Redux II" and "Detour." She's a fine writer, and all of her fic is at Gossamer, although it might be under a different name. Try searching by title rather than author.

Still Life with Implant (1773 words) by denynothing1
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The X-Files
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Fox Mulder/Dana Scully
Characters: Fox Mulder, Dana Scully
Additional Tags: Developing Relationship
Summary: Adjusting to life in remission.

My last rec is a series of missing scenes for "Redux II." The link is to Fialka's website but they are also at Gossamer if you prefer plain text. Everything she's written is excellent.

The Trade by Fialka

As an aside, this set of recs, plus one about Samantha Mulder that doesn't fit the theme, was originally posted at Tumblr for 201daysofxfiles.

Two recs came to mind immediately for today's theme, Arts and Letters. One is for The X-Files, one for Star Trek: AOS.

The first is a cute fic by Livia Balaban about Scully hiding a new hobby from Mulder. Balaban's site is gone so it is only available through the Internet Archive now. My favorite fic of hers is about Mulder writing fanfic for an imaginary scifi show. Fits the theme, but not right for this challenge. Anyway, you should check it out, too. Her name links to her Waybacked site. She's a wonderful writer and I rarely see her work mentioned anymore.

The God of Your Whims by Livia Balaban
Rated light R(language and some nookie) = S, A, H, heaps of MSR
Spoilers: general spoilers through S6
Summary: Mulder makes some big decisions when he discovers Scully's deceit.

There are also two short, shippy sequels.

I am thrilled to have an opportunity to rec this story by Tassoss as it is a favorite. It's a beautifully written backstory for Uhura, which was originally written for halfamoon 2010 .

Sing Me the Ages (6122 words) by Tassos

Since I could only think of two stories off the top of my head, I decided put on my thinking cap to see if I could come up with a character or two who is an artist or a writer. Success! Little Women is a childhood favorite. Jo March is an aspiring writer. These stories end with Jo/Laurie because that's the pairing my ten-year-old heart shipped.

Today's theme is Time and Space. I have six fic recs for The-Files, including one crossover with Doctor Who.

I had to go back and edit my first two posts. After further thought, I decided that several stories weren't focused enough on the female characters, even though they fit the day's theme. But these all pass muster, on both counts.

"The Sin Eater" is a classic science fiction story, complete with time travel and alternative history. It is also a brilliant character study of Mulder, but told from entirely from Scully's point of view. Finally, it illustrates just how much Mulder would give up in order to save his partner's life. Though written in 1996, which certainly qualifies it for fandom classic status, the writing feels very contemporary. If you only read one X-Files story from this list, make it this one.

The Sin Eater by Jane Mortimer
Rated PG | 54K | Category TRA | Archived 96-05-31
Spoilers: none
Keywords: Mulder/Scully. Alternate universe.
Summary: Scully disappears into a mysterious vortex and Mulder makes an unbelievable sacrifice to insure her safe return.

If there is one author I could choose to emulate, it would be Jess M, because of her range. She could—and did—write well in every genre: comedy, tragedy, case files, smut muffins. This is her time travel fic. The summary says it better than I could.

Rated PG | 52K | Category XR | Archived 00-07-10
Spoilers: none
Keywords: Mulder/Scully romance.
Summary: Mulder and Scully must decide whether the possibility of saving the world would be worth never knowing the other existed.

The very first sentence of "Ever After" sets the tone for this gripping story. I'd read this so many years ago that I'd forgotten the title. But the story itself was so memorable that I easily found it again with keywords.

Ever After by Jill Selby
Classification: XA
Relationship: Mulder/Scully UST
Rating: PG

Summary: Past and present collide, unleashing a deadly threat only Scully can see.

I found "Journey" on the time travel list at The X-Files Lost and Found. It is a little more romantic than what I usually read but don't let that put you off. Zuffy is a fine writer and this is a well-crafted and suspenseful fic.

Keywords: Mulder/Scully romance.
Summary: Scully and Mulder are separated by the most difficult divide: Time. Will they find their way back against the efforts of the Smoking Man?

"Lullaby For A Stormy Night" is a terrific "there is a crack in the space-time continuum" story, with gorgeous, lyrical writing, and a grownup Samantha Mulder.

After all of these years of reading fic, "The Flexible Concept of Tomorrow" is still my favorite crossover (and if know me, you know how much I love crossovers). I was an original Doctor Who fan. This is the fic that got me to watch new Who. While reading it, I fell in love with Donna Noble, sight unseen.

Today's theme is politics. The X-Files is/was about a government conspiracy to hide the truth so I guess this fits, kinda of.

Back in 2014, [personal profile] tree and I hosted a party in honor of Dana Scully's 50th birthday, called [livejournal.com profile] scully_fest. In honor of herself, I resurrected borrowed filched the Scully in 155 challenge concept from Scullyfic. Yes, I stole it. Happy now?

I've stolen it yet again for mini-moon 2018. Those X-Philes who wanted to write one in back in 2001(?) and/or 2014 and didn't quite get it together--now is your chance!

banner for Scully in 155

The idea is pretty simple. Write a ficlet of 155 words about Dana Scully. Add it here as a comment or post it as a separate entry--or both--your choice. Post it on AO3, too, if you like and add it to our little collection. I will try to write more but as I am the world's slowest writer, I'll be thrilled if I can finish one this week.

As far as I'm concerned, you do not have to stick to the themes, but of course it would be amazing if you do. You also don't have to write original flavor Dana Scully. There is a comic reboot from IDW with two issues called Deviations: The X-Files, which you can download for the grand sum of $4.00. In Deviations, Fox Mulder was abducted rather than his sister and Samantha Mulder went on to become an FBI agent. Dana Scully is Samantha's partner on the X-files.

You know what? I should do an entire post about this alternative universe for the mini-moon. If not now, when?

The original collection is here: Scully in 155.

These stories don't fit into any particular theme. Originally, I intended to post them for [community profile] halfamoon so I am happy to get a second chance with the mini-moon. I also intended to write incisive "why you must read this" blurbs for each fic, but today was long, the week is short, and my brain is fried. So, a generic but heartfelt "Go forth and read, you will like these fics" will have to do.

Here are five recs from my AO3 bookmarks: Interstellar, Rizzoli & Isles, The X-Files (x2) and Deviations: The X-Files (comic)

AUTHOR'S NOTE: Well, my plans for writing the main female characters for The X Files and Californication didn't quite work out. I think I've managed to write Scully, Samantha Mulder, Teena Mulder, Melissa Scully, Margaret Scully and Ellen. So 6 out of the 14 I had planned, and most of those were about Scully. But I'm pretty happy with what I've come up with, and I've celebrated some of the strong female characters we have in the fandom at least. This is the last one.

One for each of my Big Loves. Surprisingly (considering what I usually write), these are all work-safe, but alas, none of them are new.

The Unfathomable Distance of Stars
The X-Files - Samantha Mulder, at the end of the world.
Since Scully was the focus of everything else I wrote in XF, I decided to choose this one just because it's different.

Reflections in a Stolen "I"
Farscape - The one where Aeryn comes back. Again.
My one and only attempt at an action fic, in first person, no less. [smacks self upside the head] This was written after Bringing Home the Beacon, but before Prayer, so effectively AU. Also relatively long.

And Those Who Love
Xena, Warrior Princess - Lila, Gabrielle
The bard's sister, Lila, has her own story to tell. (Warning: Post-FIN, so angst ahoy.)
This was part of a long, unfinished odyssey detailing Gabrielle's return from Japan. (In fact, most of what I wrote in XWP never made it off my hard drive since the show was over by the time I found it and I didn't really know where to post.) This did make it as far as my site, so it's kind of new...though also {gulp} years old.

One Hand Open, One Eye Closed
Sarah Connor Chronicles - Sarah, Cameron
Cameron isn't the only one who doesn't sleep.
Not a hard choice here, as so far it's my one and only. I expected there to be more, but alas, grad school sucks down days and spits out only minutes.

Hope you enjoy reading these as much as I enjoyed writing them. And now I'm off to procrast-- er, peruse some wonderful Memories.
