This post marks the end of the 2025 HalfAMoon Fest. It has been a phenomenal year with over 200 individual posts in some diverse fandoms.

Whether you're a newcomer or a returning friend, whether you posted on one day or all fourteen, brought graphics, fics, vids, podcasts, meta, and recs or just came through and commented, thank you for making this a wonderful experience. Thanks also to everyone who promoted the community on their own pages.

I'm slowly going through and commenting on entries and helping with the masterlist. I'm making no promises on the timing of the masterlist this year, just that it will be up at some point before the 2026 fest.

If you have any thoughts on topics or ways to make next year's fest better, I welcome them in the comments. If you feel like this is something you would like to help out with next year, let me know that in the comments as well.

It has been incredible seeing your creations. Thank you for making the past fourteen days a great celebration of women! See you in February 2026!

Today's theme is first loves. We all remember ours.

Here are some ideas to get you started: Create something about a character's first love- how it began, how it ended- or write about things (not necessarily people) that a character loves or loved. You could also create something or do meta about the first female character you fell in love with (or wanted to be when you grew up).

Just go wherever the Muse takes you. If this prompt doesn't speak to you, feel free to share something that does. You can post in a separate entry or as a comment to this post.

It's the end of the fest and if you're playing catch up, check out the prompt list here. Please don't combine posts for the various days. Fest will run until the "That's a Wrap" post goes up at some point tomorrow (probably around 4pm CST) so you'll have a bit longer to finish things up.

Today's theme comes courtesy of [personal profile] kerk_hiraeth. There are some characters that only appear in a chapter of a book or a scene in a movie or an episode of a television show that make such an impression that we're thinking about them long after the show is over or book is done. Today is the day that we focus on these characters.

Here are some ideas to get you started: What brought them to the point where we meet them? What happens to them in the future? What kind of influence do they have on the other characters or the story? Or just tell us why they haunt you.

Just go wherever the Muse takes you. If this prompt doesn't speak to you, feel free to share something that does. You can post in a separate entry or as a comment to this post.

Want to get a jump start on tomorrow's theme? Check out the prompt list here. Please don't post until that day. If you are coming in later to the fest and want to post on the theme of a previous day, that's fine, just make sure to put which day that you are writing for in the subject line.

World-ending events for our characters can be as big as an apolocalypse or as personal as an unexpected change of circumstance that rocks her world.

Here are some ideas to get you started: Is there knowledge that the end of the world is coming? How does she prepare? Is she somehow responsible for setting these circumstances into motion? Does she just worry about herself or is she a leader in the resistance? If it's an event that she gets through, how is she changed on account of it?

Today's theme is fairy tales and fantasy.

Here are some ideas to get you started: Create a work around female characters in these genres, write an AU where a character in a drama, romance, comedy find themselves in a fairy tale or fantasy world, or explore a character's opinions on fairy tales or fantasy stories. You can also give a character a rich fantasy life or an opportunity to act on a particular fantasy of hers.

Today's theme is domestic life. I had a hard time picking an icon out for this category because none of the characters I gravitate toward are the stay-at-home types, but they might find themselves in a "domestic" situation from time to time or even long for one.

Here are some ideas to get you started: Where does your character live? Who do they care for? Do they cook? Are they neat-freaks? How do they do their laundry? How is their home decorated? Do they shun traditional roles or embrace them?

Just go wherever the Muse takes you. If this prompt doesn't speak to you, feel free to share something that does. You can post in a separate entry or as a comment to this post.

Secret agents, slayers, and superheroes may have an arsenal at their disposal. Other characters may their ability to influence, seduce, or manipulate as their weapons of choice.

Here are some ideas to get you started: How does their choice of weapon reflect the character? Is it something that is immediately intimidating or is it subtle?

Success is defined as the attainment of one's goals. Pretty easy, until you realize that everyone's goals are different.

Here are some ideas to get you started- What does success look like for your character? Is it making a million dollars? Achieving a certain position on the corporate ladder? Winning a court case? Slaying a dragon? Getting married and having kids? Or just being able to celebrate another birthday? How does she celebrate her successes or does she even take time to recognize them before moving on to the next goal? Who or what may be in the way of her succeeding?

Not every woman can be the hero. Some of them fit the best friend/sidekick role.

Here are some ideas for you to get started: If they meet prior to the film/show/start of the book, how did they meet? What characteristics does the bestie have that the MC doesn't? How does she rein the MC in? Do they see themselves as the best friend/sidekick, or are the roles reversed in her mind? If you don't want to go that route and just want to write or video or picspam about some of the great female best friend/hero-sidekick combinations out there, feel free to do that as well.

The best characters are three-dimensional and while we like to think our faves are perfect in every way, that can get a bit boring. There's no plot development unless they screw up, no emotional pull if they aren't vulnerable in some way.

Here are some ideas to get you started: Show a moment of weakness, talk about an episode where their flaw got them into trouble, or make up a completely new weakness for them. It doesn't have to be a heavy, message of the week kind of thing, their weakness could be chocolate or redheads or redheads bearing chocolate. Go where your imagination takes you.

Characters rarely spend the entirety of their lives indoors, so they've interacted with nature at some point.

Here are some ideas to get you started: Get your character out and about or if they can't go out, let them try their hand at gardening. How would your character behave on a camping trip or a ten-mile hike or a river raft trip? You can also involve weather- does your character dance in the rain or is she moping on the sidelines? If they are confined or the environment is no longer safe for people to be outside, write or show a backstory scene or dream sequence with them interacting with nature.

Murder is something normally found in mysteries, police procedurals, horror movies, and some dramas. Mayhem is just that and can crop up anywhere including rollicking comedies.

Here are a few ideas to get you started: Maybe your character is a detective trying to solve a crime, maybe your character is a mob boss or a riot leader, maybe your character is a hacker that enjoys chaos, maybe your character is a wife or mother who is fighting for justice after a loved one is killed. Whoever she is, let her out to play.

Self-care is important for everyone, including the characters in our favorite books, movies, or television shows, but in the confines of a story, there may be little time for self-care as the plot unspools.

Here are some ideas to get you started: What does your character do to relax? Take a long walk or a bubble bath? Go to the firing range? Shop? What’s their favorite comfort food? Do they have a place to go to get away from it all? When was the last time they had a vacation? Let us know how the character spends their downtime or what happens if they don’t take care of themselves.

Barriers and boundaries- Both are constructed to keep something contained or keep something out.

Here are some ideas to get you started: What barriers have your character experienced on the way to their goal? What boundaries have they established to protect themselves? These can be also be literal geographic boundaries that might separate the accessible from the forbidden. What happens when they are broken- is there relief, confusion, disappointment, betrayal?

Welcome to HalfaMoon 2025! We're kicking things off with the theme of Fashion.

Here are some ideas to get you started: Does the character have a signature look? What would happen if they tried a different style or color? How do they accessorize? If they're in a job or environment that requires a uniform, how do they feel the first time (or the last time) they put it on?

Just go wherever the Muse takes you. If this prompt doesn't speak to you, feel free to share something that does. You can post in a separate entry or as a comment to this post.

Want to get a jump start on tomorrow's theme? Check out the prompt list here. Please don't post until that day.

Please label your posts in the subject line by type (fiction, vid, recs, icons, etc.), fandom, and the names of your female character(s) and/or pairing. If you're writing for a particular day/theme, having that info in the subject line will be helpful to the mods. (Example: Day 1 - Fic - Star Trek - Nyota Uhura).

Have fun and enjoy this year's fest!

Posting for the HalfAMoon fest begins at midnight on February 1. I realize that it comes at different times for everyone, please don't wait for me to post the daily prompt to post for that day, or to post anything at all. I will be posting the daily prompt most days between 6 & 7 a.m. CST so if you want to jump in then, that's fine too.

Here's the handy FAQ/intro post for any questions you may have on what is appropriate for the fest. Info about OFCs & gender identity can be found there.

Please be kind when commenting. Not every character/pairing is each person's cup of tea and that's as it should be, but no bashing a writer for their choices.

Above all, have fun. Show off your creativity in celebrating these wonderful women. Experiment. Rec wildly. Let us see your favorite characters in a new light or introduce us to some we haven't met yet.

Have a wonderful HalfAMoon!

Hello all and Happy New Year!

This is just to let you know that Halfamoon will be happening this year. So dust off those ideas, start thinking about the fabulous female characters you want to create for, and I'll see you on February 1.

If anyone has a general non-fandom specific topic that they think would work, please let me know in the comments. And if anyone wants to help (or do) the masterlist this year, let me know that as well.

Here's to 2025!

Grace in action is something we know when we see. Movements flow effortlessly, creating a beautiful picture before our eyes. It looks natural. Handling a situation with grace takes both practice and effort of the person involved.

Here are some ideas to get you started: grace under fire, bowing out gracefully, grace in motion, a character that doesn’t seem to have a graceful bone in their body, admiring another character’s grace. Vidders should be able to get a lot of mileage out of this prompt.

Just go wherever the Muse takes you. If this prompt doesn't speak to you, feel free to share something that does. You can post in a separate entry or as a comment to this post.

Missed a day? Check out the prompt list here. Since this is the last day of the fest, feel free to put muliple days into one post.
