sisterdivinium: bibi from bad sisters (bibi garvey)

Title: Why YOU should be watching Bad Sisters!!!
Prompt: Murder and Mayhem
Fandom: Bad Sisters
Characters: The Garvey sisters (Eva, Grace, Ursula, Bibi, Becka)
Rating: T
Length: approx. 1500 words, with some pilfered gifs sprinkled along
Summary: A little primer on the show because everyone should watch Bad Sisters :)

If you like female characters (and who doesn’t like female characters?!) then Bad Sisters is an easy sell: its protagonists are five charming, chaotic Irish sisters whose bond is really what makes the whole show into a cohesive unit: Becka, Eva, Grace, Ursula and Bibi Garvey.

I watched Ooku: The Inner Chambers, an anime series on Netflix, last year. It chronicled an alternative history of feudal Japan where men were often afflicted with a fatal disease, resulting in a majority-women nation and a matriarchal society. The anime follows how the first female shogun and her harem of men who could never leave the palace’s inner chambers — the Ooku — came to be.

This shogun, Tokugawa Chie, and her story really stayed with me. And she definitely shed blood, sweat and tears. Lots of it.

Why Chie and this story are awesome (as spoilerless as possible) )

tldr: Chie’s character blew me away, and this anime and the original manga deserve some pimping! Highly recommended if you like intensely entertaining shows or if you like stories set in the Edo period! Netflix trailer here.

Admins, may I have a Ooku: The Inner Chambers tag please? :)

I thought of Valerie Gray from Danny Phantom immediately, given her name! But another character came to mind as well: Dani Phantom, whose character design is literally black and white. Check them out in this piece of gorgeous fan art (gen) by [tumblr.com profile] ecto-stone.

sisterdivinium: mother superion and jillian salvius from warrior nun being close again ;) (doctor superion 2)
[personal profile] sisterdivinium
As a first-timer here in the comm, I went a bit overboard with the idea of presenting not only my favourite characters from Warrior Nun, Jillian Salvius and Mother Superion, but also the ship that they form together since they are each associated with white, black and, I'd argue, with grey as well (and I hope to have tagged things right since it's a bit of a hybrid post!)

It's HERE at my journal.

Today's prompt is the perfect excuse to talk about my favorite female film lawyer, JoAnne Galloway from A Few Good Men (played by Demi Moore). At the beginning of the film, she's the one asking for the tough cases, knowing there's more to investigate and more to be done for the Marines who stand accused.

She walks into a room full of men in uniform who outrank her, but she knows her worth and she knows she should be on the case. Her request is initially shot down when the CAPT says: "I promise you, Division will assign the right man for the job." But she proves them wrong, because the right people for the job are herself and LT Kaffee. She's a damn good lawyer, and she fights for her clients even when no one else believes in her. She doesn't have to be first chair (lead defense counsel) in the case for her job to matter. She isn't afraid to point out the flaws in her colleagues and their strategy, and that makes them all better attorneys.

This is the scene where she gets introduced:

One of my favorite moments:

Kaffee : [in a seafood restaurant] Why are you always giving me your resume?
Galloway : [pauses] Because I want you to think that I'm a good lawyer.
Kaffee : [nods] I do

It's so indicative of how women in the law have to be so much better than their male counterparts to be noticed, and how they have to be ready to prove themselves over and over. This is finally a moment where Kaffee acknowledges that he knows she's just as good as he is.

Let's not forget that she's the first one to confront Jessup on the Code Red, before that infamous courtroom scene. Jessup tries to get in good with Kaffee and do the whole "good ole boys club" thing by humiliating a female officer. In the end, though, Kaffee and Galloway are the ones who nail Jessup in Court.

There isn't much fic for her at all, and I haven't even come across any fanvids, but if anyone knows of any - please do pass them my way :)

A WOMAN'S HOCKEY PRIMER

Hockey is, in this writer's humble opinion, the best sport in the world, and the women's game is the best version that this sport has to offer. Here's a bit about women's hockey and why you should be watching it.

You may know Ame-Comi Girls as those statues and dolls of the female DC superheros and villains that are ubiquitous to comic book stores. Here's the DC Store page for them if you want to refresh your memory on what they are. The basic idea behind the line was to redesign these characters in an anime style. There are clear Magical Girl and Shonen influences in the designs at least.

That's not the important part. The important part is that last year DC decided to make a comic based on these statues. And every Monday since last May you've been able to buy a new issue for $0.99 (US, I don't know what they cost elsewhere, sorry) at Comixology. They were originally going to be digital only, but they are popular enough that collected issues are being printed and sold in stores, although they are several months behind. And they are awesome.

The writers of the series, Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, decided to set it on an Earth where there are no male superheros or villains. They also decided that where possible rather than genderflip characters they'd find an already existing character to take the role. So Jessie Quick is the Flash, Alanna Strange is our hero from Rann, and Power Girl defends the world from Metropolis and welcomes her cousin Supergirl to Earth. Ame-Comi Girls started as a series of 3 issue mini-series with a varying range of interconnectedness between them before going on into an onging series with a longer story arcs. It's also on the more light hearted end of the comic spectrum so if you've grown tired of the grim dark nature of the New 52 it might be just what you need.

I will attempt to avoid spoilers in this next section, but there are screen caps from the series that include comic panels.

But let's get some images, it's a comic after all )

In conclusion, go forth and enjoy a DC Universe where all the major characters are female. All of them, good and evil.

 First off:

A picspam of the ladies of Nikita (2010 CW) and reasons you should watch it, all related to the female relationships and plotlines, on LJ and DW

And I guess I might as well link to my female-centric fanfic and vids. :P

Fic:

The Things We Say Are True, Sky High (2005), Penny/Gwen, femslash, 1200 words. A Yuletide fic.

How Do They Rise Up, Harry Potter, Hermione & Padma, gen, 3500 words. (Yes, I got English university horribly wrong. I have yet to get around to fixing that, but will some day.)

The Mary Blake Series, Twilight, Renesmee (eventually Renesmee/Leah), gen to femslash, 3600 words. This is the series of four stories in which I explored the character of Renesmee and how she could reclaim herself from a canon I thought didn't know what to do with her.

lovely in my sight, Narnia, Susan Pevensie, gen, 900 words. A Susan character study. Plus all my other Susan pieces, because I write her... a lot.

Whose Other Side Is Salvation, Narnia/Doctor Who, Susan Pevensie/The Doctor, Edmund Pevensie, het, 2500 words. Primarily Susan focused, as she journeys with the Doctor.

Here's A Girl From A Dangerous Town, Torchwood, Lucia Moretti, het, 1500 words. A woman who fell in love with Jack and then lived to a fairly natural age? She's got to be impressive.

no stamps required, Narnia/Supernatural, Susan Pevensie/Anna Milton, gen, 400 words. Anna and Susan, OTP of practicality and living through sorrow.

another path to carry her burdens, Supernatural, OFC, gen, 300 words. The dead angel in 4x16 had a vessel, and her vessel had a sister.

Vids:

In Some Dreaming State, Narnia, Susan Pevensie. No more dreaming like a girl so in love with the wrong world. To "Blinding" by Florence and the Machine.

Wild Child, Doctor Who, Amy Pond. You don't need a reason, let the day go on and on. To "Wild Child" by Enya.

Another oldie from me: a post I made few years ago about the female characters of Babylon 5 and why I love them all (even the ones that I don't).

A brief overview--

Justice League/Justice League: Unlimited is an animated show that ran from 2001 to 2004 revolving around the characters of DC Comics. Although the first two seasons focused on the original Justice League members-- Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, the Flash, Hawkgirl, and J'onn-- the third season and onward spent episodes on a variety of characters including Vixen, the Huntress, the Black Canary, and Supergirl.

So why should you be interested in this show? For one thing, the women in the show are awesome. And another, there is a wide variety of women over the five seasons, from warriors like Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl to civilians like Lois Lane and Mera to villains like Star Sapphire. And they interact with each other-- sometimes as friends, sometimes as allies, sometimes as enemies.

Below the cut are a list and description of various female characters and why I love them, as well as a list of female-centric episodes and two fanfics you might enjoy!

I have put together a collection of my woman-centric fiction for those who are interested; the link leads to AO3 because it was easier for me to "collect" them all there! These are primarily Star Trek fics, but there's a smattering of others including Fringe, Firefly/Serenity, White Collar, Gaiman's The Endless, and Resident Evil, among others.

Also, I manage a community, [livejournal.com profile] fandom_women, that is meant to be a pan-fandom celebration of women; it's new yet and very quiet but it's there!

Edited to Add: For those of you who like Star Trek, I cannot recommend highly enough the two Valeris stories I have received as gifts:

Every Good Villain by [livejournal.com profile] igrockspock which focuses on Valeris' trial, and

I am not in love with salvation by [livejournal.com profile] medie which focuses on her life afterward and the stories that are told.

I thought I'd share with you all a little look at one of my favourite women-centric TV shows, Jam and Jerusalem. It's a brilliant piece of television full of warm and subtle characterisation and complex relationships. It's a crime that it doesn't have a bigger fandom!

What's Jam and Jerusalem?

Also known as Clatterford, Jam and Jerusalem is a sweet, funny and sometimes uncomfortably accurate look at life in a small village, focusing on practice nurse Sal and her friends in the Women's Guild of Clatterford St Mary, a small Devon town.

Why Should You Watch It?

* The main characters are mostly older women, and even the minor characters are well-drawn, three-dimensional, funny, sympathetic and interesting.
* It passes the Bechdel Test every single episode.
* It stars some huge names in British comedy and drama, including Sue Johnstone, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French and David Mitchell.
* There's only ten hours of it, so you can watch the whole series over one cosy weekend
* It has an incredibly hummable soundtrack by Kate Rusby
* You can ship it every-which-way

Also, if you like, come find us on this year's [livejournal.com profile] wmcday to celebrate the club.

And thanks to the creators of this community! :)

Princess Tutu is a fandom that I see get attention about twice a year: during [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon and Yuletide. Granted, most of my fandoms are Western live-action shows, but I still don't see Princess Tutu getting nearly the amount of love it deserves. I don't know if it's that it's an anime, or that it involves ballet, or that it does not at all shy away from its fairytale aspects, but I'm here to tell you a little bit about why you should give Princess Tutu a chance, even if its name makes you wince.

(Its name makes everybody wince, right up to the very end of the very last episode when you find yourself thinking, "Yeah, there's nothing else it could've been named.")

Mongol is a 2007 film about the early life of Genghis Khan (Temudgin). It was shot in Mongolia, entirely in the Mongolian language, which alone is enough to qualify as insanely cool. However, what really steals the show for me is the awesome female characters: Temudgin's amazing wife Borte and his tough-as-nails mother Oelun.

First: hi! I've hung out in the Unpopular Women Love Posts a couple times previously, and this year I come bearing... I don't know what yet.

But first, I come bearing a Warehouse 13 fandom primer. I was considering doing it anyway, and then there was Myka in one of the new headers! (She's third from the right on the red one; Claudia's first on the left on the blue header.)

Is it any wonder that my first real TV obsession came from a show about three (well technically four) women kicking ass and taking names and generally being awesome?

Forgive the unfancy picspam, but I just had to do a Charmed post.
