[identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] halfamoon

I was intending for my [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon contribution to be a post about the women in Doctor Who – and very quickly realised that could get very long and unwieldy, because the Doctor Who universe is not only enormous (thirty seasons and counting if you stick to the TV stuff alone; there are many hundreds of novels, comics and full-cast audio dramas) but it’s also got a ton of female characters who I adore, from bit-part characters with a few lines in a single episode to companions who spent years on the TARDIS.

The best way to go seemed to be a love thread/celebration thread, of a type I’ve done before for the companions. This time it’s a post about all the women of the Doctor Who universe, companions or not, from the classic series, new series, the ‘middle school’ books/audios/comics stuff, Torchwood, and The Sarah Jane Adventures. It’s going to work in the same way as the post linked above: leave a comment with a character in the subject line, and people can respond with what they love about that character, their best moments or quotes, fic recs, drabbles, picspam, relevant links, or anything else. Any female character’s fine, though if it’s a minor character you might want to add the relevant episode title to the subject, especially if they share a name (I’m happy to squee over both Jenny from The Doctor’s Daughter and Jenny from Human Nature but we need to know which is which).

I’ll add a list of links to threads as they appear. I don’t want to dictate a bunch of rules for this, but it should go without saying this is meant to be a fun, positive thing on a comm that’s about celebrating women, so keep that in mind (“I love Mel, I don’t know why so many people hate her!” is a rhetorical statement, not a request for more information) and try not to passive-aggressively slam other characters while loving on your own (the difference between “Donna’s brilliant, I loved having a slightly older companion” and “Donna’s brilliant; finally, a companion who’s not a simpering schoolgirl”).

And… go!

It would have been so easy for Jackie to keep Rose with her in "The Parting of the Ways". She would have been safe, and home, and not traveling around with that strange Doctor. Instead, she found a way for Rose to open the heart of the TARDIS so she could travel 200,000 years into the future to fight in a war against an unstoppable force, because that was what she had to do.

I agree! Grace is really quite awesome and a well-developed character. Daphne Ashbrook's acting is quite good, in particular her balance of the comedy and drama, even in the same scenes.

She's the reason I'm a Doctor Who fan today. I fell in love with her after someone linked me to part of The Sound Of Drums and that led me to go looking for the rest of the show.

I love Lucie bcause she is witty and strong and always sounds like she is having far too much fun. I love her because she winds the Doctor up and they have a laugh and because she clearly cares so much.

I love Tegan because she shoots her mouth off at ever oppurtunity, because she cares so much about everything and she is clearly so, so strong even when she walks away. And I love how she never really trusts the Doctor is going to do anything right but really she respects him

Donna is probably my favourite; outspoken, insecure and sees right to the heart of things. I love how much she cares and will call the Doctor out if she needs to but be there supporting him if he needs it and occasionally taking the utter piss out of him.

Strong and beautiful, she walked the world during the year that never was and came out intact. Plus she's bubbly and so so fucking smart.

I've been a Doctor Who fan for over thirty years, and Sarah Jane Smith fan for in same time frame as well! But, who can love Lis Sladen and Sarah Jane Smith it's a lot of work and a lot of fan love as well too! So good luck very one!

I love Donna for being a bit of an older companion in new Who; how her relationship with Ten is based in a solid friendship which I find can be a rarity in current TV among opposite sexes; She grows throughout the series in a beautiful way; She is willing to scarf ice her life in "Turn Left" for the world when she didn't even know the Doctor proving that she herself is amazing! Also she's funny, brave, sarcastic, and compliments the Doctor very well!

Romana II is probably my favorite woman of Who. First off she's a time lady, all hail to that. She's at the doctor's level of intelligence and I always loved their ability to go back and forth on high tech solutions to things. She was always good for a random quip about some alien place just like the doctor which I always found fun.

I also love in the books how she becomes the president of Gallifrey! Kick all woman.

Ok, now I really do like Suzie. We don't see a lot of her, obviously, but I love that she had the ability to plan to bring herself back from death so far in advance. It shows what a mind she has and how much she could forsee. She was definitely a villain that I wanted to win!

Also, there is all this mystery left behind about her. We don't know how she came to be at Torchwood unlike all the others which we learned about in "Fragments." Also we don't really know what the hate is with her father that made her kill him. It all makes me very interested in her and makes me what to know what makes her tick!

Tosh is amazing. She is very smart, quite obviously, and wants to use her intellect for good. She gets excited by what she does which is lovely. Also, she is generally selfless. She wants to save her mother, she wants to help Owen. She does a lot for others, often at the expense of herself.

I just want to give her a hug and a medal!

She can pick locks with a hairpin. (What kind of Victorian upbringing is that anyway?)

She doesn't scream nearly as much in the Target novelizations, which is why she became one of my favourite companions. But I thought killing the monster with an amplified Victoria-scream was cracky-funny, seeing how she had already spent the whole season screaming anyway.
But I agree: the poor girl was better than that!!

I'd guess that it's a skill she learned while travelling with the Doctor and Jamie. Possibly an untold adventure with Richard Feynman?

I love Donna. She is so fully herself, but is also incredibly perceptive about other people. She never lets an awkward moment get the best of her and sees the Doctor for what he is.

In my personal canon, she's kicking ass on her own right now.

Jabe!

Smart, a little bit enigmatic, but most of all brave. She sacrifices her life both for the Doctor and to save other people she didn't know. And her chemistry with Nine was lovely; she's certainly the sexiest tree I've ever seen. ;)

From: [identity profile] drho.livejournal.com
Martha started as a caregiver, trying to make other people better without asking for anything in return. Practical, friendly, and (sometimes) sarcastic: she emotionally, physically, and financially supported the Doctor. Ultimately, she realized that she was a doctor and not a nurse, so left to start living her life for herself. All in all, that's not the worst ending.

I love Rose for her determination, sense of fun, and shameless loyalty to the people she loves. She forced the Doctor to track Elton down, so she could tell him off for hurting Jackie. I love that about Rose.

I love Sarah Jane as the tentative but loving mother, who regularly leads her son and his friends in dangerous situations. I love her adult friendships with the Chandras and the way she lit up, when she saw the Brig. Sarah Jane is incredible in her own right, but her evolving relationships are lovely to see.
