Title: Always the Sidekick
Fandom: School Spirits
Characters: Nicole, Maddie
Rating: PG
Warnings: Spoilers for all aired episodes
Summary: Nicole feels like she's not been much use to the team; following Maddie's conversation with Wally, Maddie wishes she could communicate to Nicole that just having her as a friend has been important.
There had always been a part of Nicole that had known that Simon and Maddie were each other’s real best friends, closer to each other than to her, but the time it had really hit home to her was when she’d found out that Simon had been able to have contact with Maddie after she was possessed by Janet, whereas Nicole couldn’t see her at all.
She knew it was stupid. Xavier and Claire couldn’t see Maddie either; it wasn’t like Nicole was the only person shut out. From what Simon had told her, what Maddie had apparently been told by her ghost friends, it was the first time a living person was known to have been able to speak with one of the ghosts, and nobody understood why Simon could see Maddie this time. But there was still a part of Nicole that still wondered why Maddie hadn’t appeared to her, even as Simon explained over and over again that she would appear to all of them if she could.
What also doesn’t help is Nicole’s anger with herself for having doubted Simon for as long as she did when he’d tried to tell them all that Janet was possessing Maddie. Claire had tried to reassure her on that one; Nicole had known as soon as she’d clapped eyes on Janet in that student house that the person in front of her wasn’t Maddie, while Claire hadn’t questioned that she was Maddie even after a few minutes of trying to talk to her. Plus the story was pretty out there; even Simon himself had had doubts at one point.
Nicole had just felt like she was being useless; Simon was the one able to communicate with Maddie, and by extension those other ghosts since Maddie could pass on their messages to him, Claire had been the one to work out how to find Janet in the background of people’s photos at Diego’s college, Xavier had been open to the idea of Maddie being possessed by Janet when Nicole wasn’t, had been determined not to give up while Nicole was accusing Simon of having lost the plot. And when Nicole had suggested reaching out to Janet’s friend Eugene, she’d been shut down, even though he’d actually given her some useful information about the days leading up to the school fire.
She was talking to Simon the next day at school about it, when Simon had said that Nicole shouldn’t have mentioned Eugene to Janet, and Nicole had told him about how she just wanted to feel like she was contributing something to their team, like there was something she could do to help bring Maddie back home to them.
Maddie heard this conversation, and wished she could reach out to Nicole, to tell her about the new perspective Wally had given her just the night before, about how the ways people affected the lives of those they touched meant just as much as greatness and grand gestures. Whatever happened with Janet, whether Maddie returned to the land of the living or stayed with the ghosts, Nicole would always be one of her best friends, and Maddie’s life had been better for having Nicole as a part of it.
