Title: Bonding Over B&E
Author: Cat Moon
Fandom: Moonlight (TV 2007)
Rating: PG-13
Words: 1033
Characters: Beth, Sara (OC), Josef (cameo)
Summary: What's a little B&E between friends? It's for a good cause, after all. We won't mention how Beth does seem to get herself into these situations. Anything for a story, amirite?
Notes: I had to do something with Beth for this fest. I love her, she's independent, resourceful, stubborn, and more than a match for the vampires in her life. Previously I'd written the boy's adventures, so I wanted to give the girls one as well.
Moonlight (TV 2007): was a show with Alex O'Loughlin as Mick, a vampire private eye, and Sophia Myles as Beth, a reporter who develops a working (and more) relationship with him. All you need to know is that they're married in this fic, and Josef calls her 'Nora' after Nora in the Thin Man movies.

BONDING OVER B&E

"I can't believe you got me into this!"

"Hey, I was just trying to help you get a hot story," Sara mumbled, staring at her fingernails. That girl did sullen like nobody's business; Beth had to hand that to her. It was like a superpower. She might have invented the term.

Beth wasn't the type to back down, though. "And the fact that it involved the club operating in direct competition with Rock and Roll Rodeo had nothing to do with it?" she queried with a skeptically raised eyebrow. Sara had been too happy to dig up dirt on the people who dared to open up in the same neighborhood as the club of her boyfriend's band.

"Hey, I knew there was something hinky about them!"

"So now we're locked in this back room with no idea what they're going to do to us now that we got caught snooping through the private records."

The owner, Del Shannon, didn't seem to quite know what to do about them either, which could be a good or a bad thing. At least it gave the women some time to figure something out.

"Right, and who dragged me into this office to 'get the goods'? Sara continued.

"Well, you're a mood," Beth declared as she leaned against the wall, folding her arms on her bent knees.

"What the hell does that mean?!"

"You're just…" Beth waved her hand around in the air. "You."

"Shane's going to kill me," Sara moaned.

Beth glared at her. "We don't need the men to rescue us!"

"Says the chick who's always rescued by her 'guardian angel' – your phrasing, not mine."

"And I've saved him just as often," Beth retorted. "He'd be dead if it wasn't for me."

"Are you keeping score?"

Instead of meeting the irritating words with more of her own, Beth jumped to her feet and began scanning the room. "There's got to be a way out of this." She did feel a bit responsible. Yes, Sara had come to her with the idea for a Buzzwire story, but Beth was the experienced older adult here. She should have gone to check out the club by herself; however, Sara fit in with these surroundings more than Beth did, so she figured the girl would provide good cover.

There was one window in the room, but since they were in the basement, it was up near the ceiling and one of those small, narrow type. Still… Beth pursed her lips in thought, turning to size up her companion.

"I think you'll fit," she decided, gesturing to the window with a chin nod.

"I'm not a vampire yet, I can't jump that high."

Beth sighed with impatience, going over to the desk in the corner. Really, she was fed up with being stuck there with Sara and ready to leave. "C'mon, help me move this thing over by the wall. We can pile those equipment cases on top of it."

They worked as a team for a few minutes, building an impromptu mountain towards freedom. As soon as it was finished, Sara began scrambling up, with Beth assisting.

"Yo, hands off the ass," Sara complained as Beth tried to give her a boost. "That's only for Shane to touch. And Josef," she added with a saucy wink.

Beth rolled her eyes. "Just get up there, get out, and get help."

"Do I look like a mountain goat?" Sara grumbled but, after some careful maneuvering, managed to reach the window. "Saw them once, at the L.A. Zoo. So cool the way they came thundering down their fake mountain—"

"Less talking, more escaping," Beth hissed through clenched teeth as loudly as she dared, darting a glance toward the door.

"Um, bad news. The window won't open."

"What?!"

"It's nailed shut or something."

Beth's hope fell. They couldn't break it; the noise would surely alert their captors. She wracked her brain, determined to come up with another plan. Her own superpower was stubbornness, and she wasn't giving up. She pushed the hair out of her face, gaze landing on her wedding ring.

"Take this," Beth said, thrusting the ring towards Sara. You can cut the glass with the diamond."

Sara did as told, carefully cutting around the pane's frame. "Oh, now Mick is going to kill you."

"Better him than them," she answered with a grimace, not looking forward to that conversation. It wasn't that Mick would really be mad about the ring, but he was very overprotective, even though she had repeatedly proved that she could hold her own. He was a work in progress.

Several tense minutes later, the glass was gone, and Sara was shimmying out. Beth heaved a sigh of relief and sat down to await the cavalry.

The cavalry turned out to be Josef.  Sooner than she expected, the door opened to admit him, with Sara close behind.

"Oh, it's you," Beth said as her brain processed the information. She should have known Sara wouldn't call Shane, and no one wanted to call Mick, either. Josef would keep their secret.

"Shannon and his two goons are knocked out in a corner," Sara explained with admiration. "They never even saw it coming." Josef touted himself a lover, not a fighter, but as a vampire, it didn't take much effort to overpower a few humans.

"If you ladies are done bonding over some B&E?" Josef responded with a grin and arched eyebrow. Sarcasm was his superpower.

"As long as you know, we rescued ourselves," Beth told him in no uncertain terms as they fled the club.

"You wound me, Nora -- you know I'd never doubt you," Josef replied, draping a companionable arm across her shoulders.

Beth took a deep breath once they emerged into the night air. It was time to go home.  "Do either of you happen to know where I can get a ring fixed?"

The story was aired, the criminals punished, and the club shut down, to everyone's relief. And if no one else ever found out exactly what had transpired that night, well, it wasn't the first secret they'd shared, and it was unlikely to be the last.

That's what friends were for.

Caper fic isn't the easiest thing in the world to write and you do a fantastic job with it here. I really enjoyed this.
