Maria DeLuca from Roswell New Mexico is probably my favorite "best friend" character. I planned on making one icon for each season, but there's a bonus season 3 icon because I couldn't decide on my favorite image and that happens to be my favorite season.
Maria is a great support character for a lot of reasons. The best thing about her character is that she evolves into a main character with her own independent story line by season three.
This Nerds and Beyond Article captures the "Top 10" Maria moments in season one, and I agree with most of the list. She starts out as such an integral part of Liz Ortecho's life. She's the former high school friend, who immediately fits right back into Liz's life. She was close with Liz's sister Rosa (maybe closer than she and Liz were?), which means that Maria is helpful during the search for answers about Rosa's death from the get-go. She's a big source of emotional support to Liz as they talk about Roswell, Rosa, and Max. She's also the sole source of support for her mother Mimi, who seems to be struggling with dementia. She takes that roll so seriously that she almost doesn't tell her friends at all, but Liz and Alex do find out and try to offer emotional support. I think it's notable that the only other person we really see supporting Maria emotionally is Michael. Sure, he's a big flirt at the bar, but he also genuinely cares and is a shoulder to cry on (literally).
Season two we find out that Maria has an alien in her ancestry, which was a great tie-in to the other aliens on the show and helps explain Maria's psychic abilities. I loved how Alex, Maria, and Michael all got closer after their near-death experience. I thought the three-way was really emotional and made sense for the characters. However, I didn't like how once Maria finds out about her brain deterioration due to her alien abilities, she pushes everyone away. She breaks up with Michael and takes on this persona that she can do everything herself. That part fits, but then none of her friends really push back on this! At least Kyle is there to be the voice of reason (as he often is). I don't even think the show shows Alex and Liz finding out about Maria's brain injuries.
I loved when Jones traps her in his 'mind palace' in season three and it's an all-out battle of wills. We find out a lot about Patricia DeLuca and Louise Truman, and what it was like for the aliens when they first arrived in Roswell. We also get to see Maria putting it all on the line for her friends. Then they all come together to rescue her, and at that point it's evident that Maria is truly a "best friend" to Liz, Rosa, Max, Isobel, Michael, Alex, and Kyle. She's not just a sidekick/support character, but a part of the family.
I still wasn't satisfied with how they concluded all of the Maria/Isobel tension by making them relatives. They do travel into the mindscape together, but I wanted more! I wish the show would have explored their relationship more in later seasons.
On an unrelated note, I think Maria is probably the best dressed character on the show! Worn On TV has a bunch of her outfits listed.
If you have thoughts about Maria, feel free to share :)
