Kitty stared into Rachel's eyes. She knew her heartbeat was loud enough for them both to hear, but she couldn't seem to calm herself. She had handled everything with apparent ease and grace as a true leader of the X-Men should. She had not allowed her surprise to be seen on the battlefield when Rachel had suddenly appeared and rescued them all, stopping the latest Big Bad in her tracks. She had not allowed her surprise to show or even admit how deeply her feelings ran for the other woman in front of her students.

But now... Now they were alone. Now it was just them. The students were all exhausted -- they all were, to be honest --, and she was certain if there were any other telepaths still awake, they had other matters on their minds and were far too busy with those to be paying attention to what the Headmistress was doing or saying behind closed doors -- the closed doors of her bedroom no less, not her office, where she should have headed. Yet both she and Rachel had headed straight here without speaking, or even thinking, a word between them. Ray had not left her side since she had reappeared, but Kitty knew that wouldn't last. It never did, and it never would. It seemed as though they were cursed to never be able to stay in the same timeframe for very long.

"So, you're back," she managed to voice at last. Still, she could not tear her eyes away from her former lover. She'd had many lovers of the years, both men and women, but this one was the one who she could never really shake. It was to her she constantly turned in her dreams, and every time they were apart, which was far too often, she never stopped hoping that she would suddenly reappear in her life just as she had today.

"Yeah." Rachel had always had a way about her that allowed her to speak volumes, when she so chose, with simple sentences. That single word was laced with every bit of poignancy and despair and even fear that Kitty was feeling now. She'd rather face a thousand Sentinels, a million other enemies, than face this one, gorgeous woman and far scarier, the thought of loving her and losing her yet again.

"I..." She breathed shakily. "I don't know if I can do this again," she admitted, though her body betrayed her by taking a step forward.

"I'm not asking you too," Rachel replied. Her voice was husky, and she seemed to have aged another ten years since last Kitty had seen her. Yet she was as drop dead beautiful as ever. "No matter how much I've missed you." Rachel was obviously trying to look away, but her gaze kept coming back to Kitty's. She inched closer even as she acknowledged, "It's not fair to you."

"It's not fair to me to not have you in my life."

"Precisely."

"At any time."

"Yeah."

"I know you can't stay -- "

"I would if I could, but you know no matter how hard I try to stay with you, something always happens..."

"Yeah."

Desperate to change the conversation to anything else, Rachel looked around them at the office. "So, you finally made it, huh? You're leading the X-Men now. I always told you you would."

A smile chased over Kitty's lips, disappearing as swiftly as it had appeared. "You know me better than anyone else, always have."

"Always will," Rachel spoke with firm conviction. "But we know how this goes, Kitty. Pryde."

"Don't. Don't pull away," Kitty found herself pleading. "Yeah, it's going to hurt," she said, reaching for her hands, "but it hurts more not to have you with me."

"Are you sure?" Rachel asked, searching her beautiful, deep brown eyes.

"Yes. No. I'm sure I love you. I'm sure it's going to hurt, but I'm sure I love you and I don't want a moment we could be being together."

"That's all I needed to hear, Kate," Rachel acknowledged and pulled her to her. They never knew how long they had. They never would, she feared, but most of all, she feared waking one day and never again getting to see her beautiful, beloved best friend, the woman who knew her, her deepest secrets and the darkest and lightest parts of her soul, better than she knew them herself. This woman completed her. She always had. She had completed her when they had both been younger, and when she had traveled back in time, long after the original Kate Pryde's death and found this younger version of her dearest friend and lover, she had completed her again. She only felt complete with Pryde, in whatever incarnation she could find her, in her life and at her side.

Kitty wanted to beg her to stay, but she knew it would do no good. Rachel had tried with everything in her the last time to stay. She had all but been torn apart when she had been sucked back into the time stream very adamantly against her will. She had fought to stay with Kitty then and had lost horribly. She couldn't ask that of her again. She'd feared, for years, she had been killed, and looking back, Kitty knew she might well have been. There was no guarantee that this was the same Rachel she had loved then, but she was still her Rachel, her love, her better half, her guiding light even when she was nowhere to be found.

And as usual, that guiding light had appeared again just when Kitty had needed her the most. "You were magnificent today," she breathed against her lips. She had come out of seemingly nowhere to save her for Kitty had been about to die defending her students when Rachel had swept in with all the glorious flame and might of the Phoenix.

"Shut up and kiss me," Rachel whispered, her hot breath hot and tingly against Kitty's upturned mouth.

"Yes, ma'am." She had never been so happy to obey anyone in her entire life. She never knew how long they had together, but they were going to make every moment, every second, matter to the best of their abilities, just as they always did whenever the Fates blessed them to be allowed to be together.

This is lovely. I'm not as familiar with their story, but I like the idea of a character following, or searching out, another character in a different incarnation. Even if it doesn't end well, it's still pretty romantic.
